3E Company Unveils Powerful New Product Compliance Content Solution for SAP® Material Master

3E Company, a leading provider of EH&S compliance and information management services, today announced the availability of Ariel Data Manager® (ADM)-MM, a powerful new product compliance content solution that helps material managers optimize SAP® Material Master (MM) as a central source for storing and retrieving material-specific data in SAP. The new solution enables SAP MM users to streamline business processes and reduce costs by collecting, managing, and integrating critical regulatory product compliance documents directly into their SAP systems.

Productive business and regulatory compliance management demands frequent, rapid, direct, and easy access to product information from raw material suppliers. ADM-MM promotes both efficiency and compliance by providing a powerful solution for integrating valuable content in SAP MM.

ADM-MM’s sophisticated content management features enable users to import robust document sets, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), compliance declarations, technical data sheets, and material declarations, directly into SAP MM for association with purchase requisitions, bills of materials (BOMs), and finished goods. The feature streamlines the uploading and updating of compliance documents into SAP MM, saving valuable time and increasing efficiency and consistency across the entire organization.

“3E has a proven track record of providing industry-leading, knowledge-based content solutions designed specifically for integration with specialized SAP modules. ADM-EHSAP facilitates the management of substance-level regulatory content in SAP Environment Health and Safety Management (EHSM). ADM-VMSDS brings supplier SDS documents and critical data points to SAP EHSM. And now we’re meeting the demand for product compliance data in SAP Material Master with ADM-MM,” said Julia Tsvetkova, director, Product Management, 3E Company. “Today’s supply chain and material managers face increasingly difficult product compliance challenges that demand powerful and specialized content management capabilities such as those featured in ADM-MM.”

When combined with 3E’s custom obtainment and SDS management services, ADM-MM also promotes enhanced:

supplier communications and data extraction. 3E’s team of experts contacts suppliers to obtain compliance documents on the customer’s behalf, extracting any required data elements to drive supplier/product analytics.

global document obtainment and delivery. SAP MM is optimized when used in conjunction with 3E’s industry-leading infrastructure for global document obtainment operations and its secure, high-availability data management and delivery technology.

SAP MM-related resource optimization. Users can free up internal resources by letting 3E assume the burden of acquiring and maintaining the currency of product compliance documentation.

Along with the efficiencies created by using ADM-MM, combining the solution with 3E services to obtain additional compliance content from suppliers presents many additional benefits. 3E can assume the burden of obtaining, maintaining, verifying, and augmenting required product compliance documentation and subsequent revisions on an ongoing basis, freeing up internal resources for other activities. 3E employs a full-time staff of manufacturer relations specialists who maintain relationships with tens of thousands of manufacturers. This team is dedicated to ensuring that the database’s currency is maintained according to regulatory and client-defined business rules. 3E’s team of regulatory research specialists can make sure that the obtained documentation has all necessary elements as stipulated by regulatory authorities and client requirements and add those elements if not provided by suppliers.

Carlsbad, CA, and St. Louis, MO, April 3, 2012 — 3E Company, a leading provider of environmental health and safety (EH&S) compliance and information management services, and Spartech Corporation (NYSE:SEH), a leading producer of plastic sheet, compounds, and packaging solutions, today announced that Spartech has deployed and integrated multiple 3E solutions for enhanced product safety and stewardship. 3E Company is a subsidiary of Verisk Analytics (Nasdaq:VRSK).

Spartech currently uses the 3E Online®-MSDS material safety data sheet (MSDS) management platform, the MSDgen® MSDS authoring platform, the Ariel WebInsight™ online regulatory compliance tool, and 3E Integrated MSDS Data for MSDgen. Spartech played a significant role in the development of 3E Integrated MSDS Data for MSDgen, providing valuable feedback on the functionality of the solution, which features the integration of 3E’s MSDS management data and services with the MSDgen platform.

“Safety and sustainability are of utmost importance to Spartech. 3E Company offers innovative and reliable solutions with powerful data-sharing capabilities to help us efficiently meet our goals in a cost-effective manner,” said Bernard C. Henn, corporate product stewardship manager, Spartech Corporation. “We chose to work with 3E because it’s the only vendor that could achieve the complex integration we desired. Integrating our EH&S and product stewardship functions offers us a tremendous competitive advantage.”

With 3E Integrated MSDS Data for MSDgen, the supplier MSDSs and raw material data used in Spartech products are updated and imported into the MSDgen authoring platform on a regular basis, dramatically reducing the amount of time required to acquire and access the documents and data. 3E Integrated MSDS Data for MSDgen extracts chemical ingredients and key physical-chemical data — such as boiling point, physical state, density, and flash point — to load into MSDgen as key raw material inputs for the development of product-level hazard communication documentation. The seamless integration of indexed data from the raw material MSDSs streamlines the authoring process, because now the MSDS author doesn’t have to manually enter this information into MSDgen.

In addition, integrating MSDS management and authoring functions promotes increased conformance with both existing and emerging regulatory requirements, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) realignment of the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Integrating the two functions helps ensure that the most accurate and comprehensive raw material data is reflected on the newly authored MSDS, thereby promoting improved conformance.

“3E is steadfastly committed to providing our customers with the integrated and innovative tools they need to manage chemical product safety and product stewardship, both upstream and downstream,” said Robert S. Christie, CEO and president, 3E Company. “By integrating two of our best-in-class solutions, we’ve created a powerful tool for global companies that need to integrate their MSDS management and authoring functions.”

3E Company Strengthens Specialized GHS Practice to Support Corporate Conformance with OSHA’s New Hazard Communication Standard 2012

3E Company, a leading provider of EH&S compliance and information management services, today announced that it has enhanced its specialized GHS practice to help ease conformance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 2012, which now aligns with the United Nations’ (UN) Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

OSHA published the Hazard Communication Standard 2012 in the Federal Register on March 26, 2012, with the final rule affecting millions of workplaces and having a profound effect on the supply chain. HCS 2012 introduces a set of criteria for classifying human health and physical hazards, as well as OSHA-defined hazards and hazards not otherwise classified (HNOC), which has far-reaching implications for the data contained within Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and product labels. Many companies will need to reclassify their hazardous materials and capture additional data for publication on labels and SDSs. In many instances, SDSs and labels will need to be re-authored to conform to the new guidelines set forth in HCS 2012.

With the deadline for adopting these significant changes looming on the horizon, 3E Company has further expanded its specialized GHS practice to ease the burden of conforming to these complex new requirements. Specifically, the company is enhancing its many SDS authoring solutions to better support conformance with HCS 2012. The enhancements include:

support for specialized MSDS Authoring Services to assist manufacturers, users, and distributors in conveying critical hazard communication information to their employees and downstream customers in accordance with HCS 2012

the introduction of a new Authoring on Request Service for manufacturers with smaller authoring projects requiring the development of documents conforming to HCS 2012 for 20 products or less (This new service is designed to be extremely efficient and attractive for small to mid-size companies that require only a limited number of documents.)

numerous GHS-related enhancements to the MSDgen® MSDS authoring system to facilitate the generation of SDS and label documents conforming to HCS 2012

“With the official promulgation of HCS 2012, the clock is now ticking toward implementation. We strongly advise affected companies to begin executing their compliance initiatives if they have not already done so,” said Robert S. Christie, CEO and president, 3E Company. “3E is well positioned to facilitate compliance with GHS in both the United States and around the globe because we possess the data, tools, systems, processes, and best practices to help our customers conform to both the product and workplace safety obligations outlined in the rule. We have been helping our customers conform to GHS since it was first implemented in New Zealand in 2001, and over the last 11 years, we have obtained a vast amount of GHS-related experience, which will be very valuable to companies now moving to conform to HCS 2012.”
3E Company Announces New Exposure Scenario Authoring Service to Facilitate REACH Conformance

3E Company, a leading provider of environmental health and safety (EH&S) compliance and information management services, today announced its new Exposure Scenario Authoring Service, aimed at streamlining conformance with Europe’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulatory framework. The new service alleviates the burden of producing lengthy and complex exposure scenarios (ES) and extended Safety Data Sheets (eSDS) documents and enhances product stewardship quality and productivity.

Under REACH guidelines, companies supplying 10 tons or more per year of a hazardous substance must provide exposure scenarios as an integrated part of their Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The new, longer document, known as an eSDS, must cover all “identified uses” of a substance throughout its life cycle. An ES must include risk assessments for every use to ensure the substance is properly controlled at all times.

The ES, as defined by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), consists of four sections, all requiring detailed explanations: Exposure Scenario Scope; Contributing Exposure Scenarios for controlling environmental, worker, and consumer exposure; Exposure Estimation; and Guidance to Downstream Users. Given the vast amount of information required to ensure conformance, 3E Company anticipates that the creation of exposure scenarios will be an additional source of concern for manufacturers and distributors already struggling to comply with rapidly evolving global regulations.

3E’s Exposure Scenario Authoring Service eases the burden by facilitating the creation of accurate and reliable exposure scenarios for pure substance products as well as for individual components in a mixture. The eSDS’s exposure scenarios are provided either as separate documents or attached to and integrated within part of the European SDSs.

“Developing comprehensive, compliant, and accurate exposure scenarios and extended Safety Data Sheets is incredibly time-intensive and could drain a company’s in-house product stewardship resources,” said Yasmin Chen, manager, Outsourced Authoring Operations, 3E Company. “3E has leveraged our unparalleled SDS authoring expertise to serve as the foundation of the new Exposure Scenario Authoring Service. Our talented team of authors and experts continually strives to ease the burden of environmental regulatory conformance for our customers, and the introduction of our Exposure Scenario Authoring Service is certainly a realization of that goal.”

“We anticipate that many customers will find this new service to be a valuable addition to their arsenal of compliance solutions,” added Chen.

3E’s Exposure Scenario Authoring Service is available immediately.

3E Company’s MSDgen 6.06 Streamlines REACH Conformance with Enhanced eSDS and Exposure Scenario Development Capabilities

3E Company, a leading provider of environmental health and safety (EH&S) compliance and information management services, today announced the availability of MSDgen® 6.06, an enhanced version of its Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) authoring system. The new version enables users to more productively develop and distribute compliant and reliable hazard communication documents that conform to today’s rapidly evolving and complex regulatory requirements, including Europe's Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulatory framework.

MSDgen 6.06 addresses the new requirement to produce REACH Exposure Scenarios (ES) while alleviating other burdens for manufacturers and distributors already struggling to conform to REACH’s initial requirements. To facilitate the development of the ES component of the newly required extended Safety Data Sheets (eSDSs), MSDgen 6.06 offers users several enhanced features to help develop, maintain, and distribute these complex documents. These features include the ability to automatically append externally authored ESs to SDSs that are authored and stored in MSDgen, thus streamlining the management and distribution of the new documents.

MSDgen 6.06 supports the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) ESCom Standard Phrase Library with the addition of a new function that allows users with licensed ESCom library and translation content packages to assign statements into the desired MSDgen section and subsection glossary structures. Mapping these statements greatly accelerates a company’s ability to author eSDSs and provide the required language translations. This new mapping feature allows users to adjust or create their own unique mappings that suit their products and compliance needs. The framework allows customers to configure and tailor their systems, while remaining compatible with future library releases and ensuring proper compatibility with future initiatives.

MSDgen 6.06 also aligns with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) SDS Guidance version 1.0, which was published in September 2011. This includes the numbering of specific subsections throughout the 16 sections of the SDS. Various aspects of Commission Regulation (EU) No 286/2011 and the second Adaptation to Technical Progress (ATP) to the CLP Regulation have been incorporated as well, including changes to the sensitizer and ozone hazards. The implementation of these two important regulatory documents enables users to produce compliant SDSs that are up to date with the most recent EU requirements.

Other new features include support for:

Datamatrix barcodes and Quick Response codes on labels

updated Japanese MSDS templates that conform to the country’s Chemical Substance Control Law

reformatted toxicological and eco-toxicological data tables on all templates based on expert review

modifications to Section 9 of all templates to allow printing of exponential notation and enhancements to the associated property printing
